Provide bespoke powerchair solutions with the Scoot Control - the story of Precision Rehab
14-year-old Andie from Leicestershire was born with Rett Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects brain development, resulting in severe levels of mental and physical disability. It is estimated to affect about 1 in 12,000 girls born each year and is only rarely seen in boys.
From manual chair to powerchair
Although Andie has always been able to take a few steps and weight bear if supported by someone, she has used a manual wheelchair from a very early age. However, by the age of 10, Andie's parents Phil and Missy decided that the time had come to look into powerchairs as it was getting increasingly difficult to push Andie in her manual chair.
Missy explains: "The continuous lifting of Andie and pushing her in her chair put extreme levels of pressure on my body, resulting in more an more frequent bouts of pain. Eventually, we went for a powerchair".
Over the next few years, Andie's chair worked well, but eventually it started to show its age and in 2018 they were beginning to look for a replacement.
At Naidex (UK event for independent living) they met Matt from Precision Rehab. Together with Matt they decided on a Paravan PR30 powerchair, with Consolor seat system.
It is hard to put into words how easy it is to operate and what a huge difference it has made to me as Andie's full-time carer.
First UK powerchair with Scoot Control
During the assessment, Missy had explained to Matt her difficulties when driving the old chair with an attendant control. Matt then proposed and fitted the mo-vis Scoot Control to Andie's PR30.
This new system, together with the modern R-net controls makes driving the powerchair very easy for Missy or anyone else. At the time of delivery, this was the first powerchair in the UK to have the Scoot Control fitted, which is complimented by the fitting of a gyro stability system to help when controlling the chair outdoors, where there can be uneven paths.
"The Scoot Control is simply amazing, as is the USB Charger and mount for Andie's eye gaze computer, which is her communication device and enables her to join all the time, just like everyone else.
It is hard to put into words how easy it is to operate and what a huge difference it has made to me as Andie's full-time carer", commented Missy. "We knew we were asking for the limit in terms of what we could achieve with a bespoke powerchair for Andie, but the end result is superb. Andie loves her new chair!"
